This two-day introductory workshop explores the fundamentals of mordant (oil and acrylic size)
gilding with an emphasis on practical application and creative flexibility. Participants will learn
essential surface preparation, adhesive selection, high karat gold and other metal leaf handling,
and finishing techniques suitable for a wide range of materials including plastic, ceramics, wood,
paper, canvas, and decorative objects.
Designed for artists, crafters, photographers, woodworkers, framers, and art teachers, the
course focuses on accessible methods that can be integrated into existing creative practices
without specialized equipment. The workshop concludes with a brief introduction to printing on
hand-gilded paper, offering a glimpse into expanded possibilities for combining gilding with
image-making.
No prior gilding experience is required.

Barrie Lynn Bryant Bio:
Barrie Lynn Bryant is an interdisciplinary artist, photographer, and frame maker based in
Thermopolis, Wyoming, where he is the proprietor of Lucky Skunk Studios. A working artist
since 1989, he has exhibited in 37 states and received more than 200 professional awards.
Since 1995, he has designed and crafted custom picture frames guided by his core belief:
“There can be an original frame for every original artwork.”
Bryant’s current focus centers on gilding and surface design. He has received six Professional
Development Grants from the Wyoming Arts Council to pursue gilding research and practice. He
is a member and past Trustee of the Society of Gilders and has authored numerous articles on
gilding for The Gilder’s Tip, Picture Framing Magazine, and American Woodturner. His most
recent feature examines The Kiss and its gilded frame.
In 2016, Bryant pioneered his process of printing on hand-gilded paper, which he taught at the
West Coast Art & Frame Expo in 2017, 18, and 20, and through his Creative Aging programs in
Wyoming. His work continues to integrate photography, gilding, and fine craft, reflecting a career
defined by both interdisciplinary exploration and material innovation. His current photographic
project, Veterans in Focus, will be exhibited at the Wyoming Territorial Prison State Historic Site
in Laramie beginning May 22, with an opening reception on May 29. He has lived and worked in
Wyoming since 1994.
